THE MORNING BREEZE WAFTING THROUGH THE GROVED
AND SHRUBS IS COOL AND PLEASANT

Standing under the gabled roof of a Thai-style teak house with high ceilings and with a staircase leading to a spacious terrace, you can't help feeling that you are away from the big city and, instead, in a small village. Such an atmosphere is rarely found in a tourist city such as Pattaya. Usually, all we see are tall hotels and condominiums.

But you can find such an idyllic atmosphere in the Sugar Hut Resort and its surroundings, where you get the feeling the clock has been turned back to the days when people in Thailand lived in houses like these, close to nature.

The resort offers Thai-style architecture in both the single houses and duplex units, all with wide spacious terraces and well-stocked gardens.

The morning breeze wafting through the groves and shrubs is cool and pleasant.

The duplex unit has two bedrooms on the right and left wings and is brightly decorated with red bed sheets over a mattress framed with wooden panels.

Equally Thai in style, the bathroom has two huge ceramic water jugs inset with dragon designs, plus a silver bowl for you to ladle the water over your body. For foreigners who may not be used to this kind of bathing, there is a shower. This is an open-air bathroom where you can look up and see the sky. Sarongs and seaman's pants are available for your comfort after your cool and refreshing bath or shower.

With such a set-up you and your partner could be forgiven for feeling like Jamuenwaiwongsa and Mae Nok Yoong, hero and heroine of "Ruen Mayura," one of Thailand's most celebrated novels.

Decoration work in the single houses is similar to the duplex, but less extensive.

Although these Thai-style houses are not on the beach there are three swimming pools just around the corner that are open twenty-four hours a day. They are equipped with Jacuzzis set amidst green and lush vegetation. The driveway from the gate to the hotel building runs parallel with a small, tree-lined walkway dotted with slabs of sandstone set on pace apart.

As the sun goes down, the evening breeze carries the scent of Phumaria. Dusk approaches, it will soon be dark. Time to count the stars and be a part of nature.
